Born into a musical family, Scottish soprano Emily Mitchell, was submersed in music from an early age. She began her formal classically training at the RSAMD (now Royal Conservatoire of Scotland), where she gained a Bachelor in Music and a Masters in Music under the tutelage of Margaret Aronson. She continues her vocal study with soprano Jane Irwin. She is a Live Music Now! artist with her accompanist Geoffrey Tanti and is a regular performer with Scottish Opera.
Emily has made frequent appearances across Europe at the Transeuropeanes Festival in Rouen, in Heilbronn, and in Hamburg. As a regular performer with the Dunedin Consort, she has performed in the Toroella de Montegri Festival, Versailles Handel Festival, in Antwerp in Weimar as part of the Thüringia Bachwoche Festival, and most recently in their performance of Mozart Requiem in the Oslo Internasjonale Kirkemusikkfestival.
Emily’s operatic experience includes Mélisande/Pelleas et Mélisande; Elsa/Lohengrin; Marzelline/Fidelio; Lauretta/Gianni Schicchi Opera Bohemia; Chorus/Flying Dutchman for Opera North; Chorus (Liu cover) Turandot for Scottish Opera; Echo/Ariadne Auf Naxos (cover) and Ninette/L’amour Pour Trois Oranges (cover) for RSAMD production; Sandman/Hänsel und Gretel for Aberdeen International Youth Festival; Fiordiligi/Cosi Fan Tutte BYO workshops; Helena/A Midsummer Nights Dream and Countess Almaviva/Le Nozze di Figaro for Ian Fleming Opera Scenes RSAMD.
She has appeared with the Royal Scottish National Orchestra in Mendelssohn Hymn of Praise at the Usher Hall 100th birthday Celebration, a concert performance of Poulenc’s Les Carmélites, and in Kurt Weil’s The Rise and Fall of Mahagony conducted by H.K.Gruber in the Edinburgh International Festival.She has also appeared with the Scottish Chamber Orchestra in the semi chorus for Les Martyrs Des Saint Sebastien. Other concert performances include Berlioz Les Nuit D'étés Edinburgh Symphony Orchestra and Mahler Symphony No.4 with the Mahler Players.
Emily has been broadcast on BBC Radio Scotland in Mendelssohn Rediscovered, and BBC Radio 3 several times. She also appeared with the BBC SSO and the London Symphony Chorus singing in the Scottish premiere of MacMillan’s St John Passion. She made her BBC Proms début in August 2010 at the Royal Albert Hall with the BBC SSO, conducted by Donald Runnicles in Vaughan Williams’ Serenade to Music.
Emily has an extensive concert career ranging from solo recital work to Oratorio. Her Oratorio engagements include Brahms Requiem at the Usherhall, Mozart’s Coronation Mass (Canterbury Cathedral) and Exultate Jubilate, Haydn’s Creation, Mendelssohn’s Elijah at Canterbury Cathedral, Howells Hymnus Paradisi, Bach Magnificat and Rossini’s Petite Messe Solennelle, Handel Gloria, Vivaldi's In Furore Iustissimae Irae, Handel Messiah at the AMUZ in Antwerp.
Emily's commercial recordings include Bach Magnificat, Handel’s Esther and Mozart Requiem with Dunedin Consort, recorded by Linn Records and Handel's Triumph of Time and Truth with Ludus Baroque and Delphian Records. The Mozart Requiem won a Gramaphone award and was nominated for a Grammy award.
